The following factors could affect Italian markets on Wednesday.

    POLITICS
    Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday reaffirmed
her government's "full support" for Ukraine in a call with
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who said separately that Italy
was considering providing Kyiv with air defence systems. 
    COMPANIES
        BANKS
    Italian banks on Tuesday agreed with trade unions to extend
until the end of February a nationwide contract for bank
employees that was due to expire at the end of the year, ahead
of talks on a new contract.

    The Treasury has made contact with some major banks --
UniCredit and Banco BPM -- and holding group Unipol in recent
weeks about a potential investment in MPS but neither is
interested under these conditions, Il Messaggero reported,
adding that a potential solution could involve the sale of some
500-800 branches out of the current 1,368 so as to reduce its
risk-weighted assets (rwa) to make the deal more attractive.

    The listing of Eni's subsidiary Plenitude remains on the
cards for 2023 in case markets rebound, writes Il Sole 24 Ore,
adding, however, that the green energy giant is continuing to
evaluate different strategic options, including the entry of an
institutional investor, prior to listing, should the market
turbulence continue next year.

    Former ecological transition minister Roberto Cingolani
could be chosen as the new CEO of defence group Leonardo when
key positions at some of the state-controlled enterprises come
up for renewal in the spring of next year, La Stampa reported.
Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi is likely to be re-confirmed, the paper
added, while Enel head Francesco Starace could be replaced with
either Francesco Venturini, head of Enel X, Terna CEO Stefano
Donnarumma or current Poste CEO Matteo Del Fante.

for November (1000 GMT)

    The board of the state-controlled Italian airline is set to
meet on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing negotiations with
Lufthansa, Il Messaggero reported. 
    Milan Stock Exchange After Hours market closed.
    DIARY
    Rome, Senate examines 2023 budget, with a final vote
expected on Thursday.
