    Russian President Vladimir Putin, Italian Prime Minister
Mario Draghi and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed
Afghanistan in separate phone calls on Thursday, highlighting
the importance of addressing humanitarian issues in the country.
The discussions came as G7 foreign ministers called for the
international community to unite in its response to the Afghan

    CORONAVIRUS
    Italy reported 55 coronavirus-related deaths on Thursday
against 69 the day before, the health ministry said, while the
daily tally of new infections increased to 7,260 from 7,162.

    The capital increase that MPS will have to launch with the
State still as controlling shareholder could be closer to one
billion euros rather than three billion euros, reported Il Sole
24 Ore. The state could end up paying less than 700 million
euros with minority shareholders subscribing the rest of the
capital increase, the daily said.
    The Monte dei Paschi brand will not be able to survive as an
independent legal entity due to opposition expressed by the
European Central Bank during talks with the Treasury and
UniCredit, Il Messaggero said, citing a virtual meeting which
was held two days ago between the Treasury and UniCredit. The
option of creating a local bank in Siena controlled by UniCredit
to maintain the MPS brand has, therefore, been excluded. Il
Messaggero added that the exclusivity granted to UniCredity by
the Treasury, due to expire on Sept. 7, will certainly be
extended as the due diligence process is more complex than
expected.      
    
    STELLANTIS  STLA.MI 
    Stellantis said on Thursday it will halt production at its
plant in Rennes, western France, next week due to a global chip
shortage. The world's No. 4 carmaker, formed in January from the
merger of PSA and Fiat Chrysler (FCA), also said it will
partially stop output at its plant in Sochaux in eastern France.

    International oil companies operating in Nigeria owe $4
billion to an agency responsible for fostering development in
the Niger Delta, the impoverished wetlands region where much of
the industry is located, a minister said on Thursday.
