U.S. stock indexes edged higher on Wednesday in a holiday-shortened trading
session, as data pointing to a softening economy raised hopes for a September
start to the Federal Reserve's policy easing.  .N 
    At 12:45 ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average  .DJI  was down 0.10% at
39,291.92. The S&P 500  .SPX  was up 0.33% at 5,527.23 and the Nasdaq Composite
 .IXIC  was up 0.64% at 18,143.418.
