Iberdrola expects to seek extension of Spain's entire nuclear fleet

MADRID, Feb 25 (Reuters) - The chief of Iberdrola IBE.MC expects the company to seek the extension of the lifespan of all nuclear reactors in Spain following a similar request already sent for the Almaraz nuclear plant.

A major blackout in April revived the debate over nuclear power in Spain, which plans to close all of its reactors by 2035, starting with Almaraz in 2027.

"Nuclear power plants are necessary, are safe, are efficient and contribute to lower prices," Executive Chairman Ignacio Galan told analysts on Wednesday.

"That's why we have already asked for the extension of Almaraz and we will ask for the extension others in the future, I imagine," he said in a call following the company's 2025 results.

The owners of the Almaraz plant, Iberdrola, Endesa ELE.MC and Naturgy NTGY.MC, have asked to extend the lifespan of their Almaraz nuclear plant by about three years.

Under the existing plan, the phase-out would start in 2027 with the closure of the first reactor at the plant in western Spain. The plant's second reactor is set to shut down the following year.
