April 16 (Reuters) - BHP Group BHP.AX said on Wednesday it got an approval from the New South Wales government for a four-year extension at its Mt Arthur thermal coal mine in Australia, allowing operations to continue until June 2030.
The company expects to produce between 13-15 million tonnes of energy coal in the financial year ended June 2025 from the site, which is scheduled to close at the end of the decade.
In 2022, BHP revealed plans to wind down operations at Mt Arthur Coal by 2030, citing the mine's approach to the end of its economic viability.
As part of the closure plans, BHP said it was exploring the development of a pumped hydro energy storage project at the site with infrastructure company Acciona Energia ANE.MC.
