TOKYO, Dec 24 (Reuters) - Chugoku Electric Power  9504.T  restarted the 820 megawatt (MW) No.2 reactor at its Shimane nuclear power station in western Japan on Sunday following a temporary shutdown for safety checks, a company spokesperson said on Tuesday.
The reactor, which was restarted on Dec. 7 for the first time in about 13 years, was temporarily halted on Dec. 15 for safety inspections of facilities and equipment.
    The company aims to resume commercial operations of the reactor by mid-January, the spokesperson said.
    As of Tuesday, Japan has 12 operating reactors with a total capacity of 11,247 MW.
    Many companies are still going through a re-licensing process to comply with stricter safety standards imposed after the 2011 Fukushima disaster. They had 54 operational reactors before it.
    The table below shows the status of Japan's nuclear power plants.
    The regional utilities are: Chubu Electric Power  9502.T , Chugoku Electric Power  9504.T , Hokkaido Electric Power  9509.T , Hokuriku Electric Power  9505.T , Kansai Electric Power  9503.T , Kyushu Electric Power  9508.T , Shikoku Electric Power  9507.T , Tohoku Electric Power  9506.T  and Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco)  9501.T .
    They are referred to in the table by their regional names.
    Japan Atomic Power Company (Japco), a nuclear energy company, owns two reactors.
