ECONOMY
Italy may extend beyond May 1 a cut in excise duties on fuels as part of efforts to help families and firms cope with surging energy prices, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Tuesday.
Meloni also called on the EU to allow greater flexibility in its deficit rules, and said the government had set aside almost 1 billion euros to extend and reinforce tax breaks designed to encourage employers to hire staff.

The Italian lender's new board is expected to call an extraordinary shareholders' meeting between June and July to approve the merger with Mediobanca MDBI.MI, with the aim of closing the deal in the fourth quarter, daily Milano Finanza reported on Tuesday.
The new CEO of Mediobanca could be Riccardo Mulone, head of UBS Italy, replacing Alessandro Melzi d’Eril, according to the newspaper.

Private equity firm CVC Capital CVC.AS is weighing a 9 billion euro ($10.54 billion) bid for the Italian payments group, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

(*) The Italian energy producer on Tuesday signed an agreement with Venezuela's oil ministry and state-run oil company PDVSA to relaunch a heavy crude project in the Orinoco Belt, the company and government officials said.
Eni has hired JPMorgan to advise it on the potential sale of a cracking site in the south of the country, a source familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

Any decisions on investment vehicle Delfin's holdings in Italian financial institutions -- including insurer Generali and bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena -- will be taken by its board, Delfin's Chair Francesco Milleri said on Tuesday.

The Italian construction and engineering company said on Tuesday it had won contracts and orders worth 220 million euros in the first quarter of this year.
